DIY Farmhouse Valentine Spool...
Is your house feeling a little bare now that the Christmas decorations are down?
You've come to the right place!
Today I'll be showing you how to make this rustic heart art (say that ten times fast)...
Here's what you'll need:
(This post includes some affiliate links for your convenience.)
- A cable spool, pallet, or piece of weathered wood
- A large piece of kraft paper
- White pencil, crayon, or chalk
- White paint and paintbrush
- Sand paper or my favorite sander (makes these types of projects a dream!)
Step 1: Fold a large piece of kraft paper in half (so it looks like a card), and use a pencil to draw half of a heart, starting at the fold. Think back to your elementary school years. Use scissors to cut out the heart, and unfold.
Step 2: Center the heart on your spool, pallet or piece of wood. I chose to have the wood slats of the spool going vertically, based on the condition of the spool and some little imperfections I wanted to cover up. Make loops out of tape and secure the back of the heart to the spool.
Step 3. Using your white chalk, pencil or crayon, trace the heart.
Step 4: Paint the outline of the heart with your white paint. Then, fill in, painting with the grain of the wood.
Step 5: After the paint dries completely, sand down the white painted heart for a weathered, distressed finish.
And that's all there is to it for a large, farmhouse-neutral heart piece of art that will look charming long past Valentine's Day! Want a similar look you can just buy, instead of make? How cute is this one?!
